On the Map: Bali, Indonesia

Bali, Indonesia is a stunning travel destination – notable for its gorgeous natural views, magical Insta-worthy stays and experiences, and inexpensive prices for the Western traveler. Today, we want to share a few key things to keep in mind if you’re planning to travel to beautiful Bali.

Bali offers so much, from beach days to waterfalls to Balinese cooking classes to many spa experiences. Having an easy-going, flexible mindset and a positive attitude will ensure you’re able to get the most out of your trip.

  1. Visit Bingtang supermarket to get produce, and bottled water. This is one of the largest supermarkets you’ll find in Bali, and offers a ton of basics necessary for your stay. Purchasing bottled water is a must when staying in Bali – the last thing you want to deal with when staying in this gorgeous destination is “Bali belly” – i.e. painful, uncomfortable, and inconvenient stomach problems that will disrupt your adventures and have you making way too many bathroom stops. It’s not worth it. Buy bottled water, wash your produce, and eat a balanced diet to ensure you can enjoy your trip without stomach aches!
  2. Google all the Warung restaurants for the best local cuisines. Warung refers to local owned (often family owned) small businesses and restaurants. A quick Google search will send you in the right direction to enjoy authentic cuisine during your stay!
  3. Be sure to get all your necessary medical shots to ensure a safe and healthy trip. This is a step you do not want to skip before your trip. Again, it’s not worth it to invest in a journey across the globe and spend the vacation sick in bed or in a foreign doctor’s office. Take care of your body before departing your hometown so you can be confident that you’re the most prepared to enjoy the trip.
  4. Bring medicine your body is familiar with, like Pepto Bismol and Advil. You do not want to find yourself in a Balinese pharmacy trying to read labels and figure out if this medicine is comparable to ones at home. Just pack an emergency bag of what you’d find in the medicine cabinet at home (i.e. Advil/Tylenol, Benedryl, Sudafed, Pepto Bismol, Tums, Nyquil). You’d much rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it!
  5. Go top Ubud and check out the Monkey Forest. These last two pieces of advice are fun ones – activities Bradley has personally enjoyed during his stay in Bali! Mandala Suci Wenara Wana, well known as Ubud Monkey Forest, is the sanctuary and natural habitat of the Balinese long-tailed macaque. Plan to visit and be enamored with these beautiful animals!
  6. Head to Ketut Liyer’s for a palm reading. This traditional medicine man may sound familiar to you from his feature in “Eat, Pray, Love.” While he has passed since the movie was made, he passed the baton to his son so you can still enjoy a visit to his house and a memorable, and perhaps eye-opening palm reading sessions.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of what to prepare for, expect, and plan on your Bali trip, but we hope that just a few of these pieces of advice will be valuable to you on your trip to this stunning location.
